March 27, 2015 • Santa Cruz CA — Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz (MBoSC) today announced that their Santa Cruz Super Enduro (SCSE) fundraising event at Soquel Demonstration State Forest (SDSF) will not run in 2015.
The number of special use permits at SDSF is restricted through the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) in order to balance the goals and priorities of the State Forest Program. Land manager SDSF CAL FIRE will be focusing its limited resources on other projects this year, including the completion of the Flow Trail in partnership with MBoSC. Forest Manager and CAL FIRE Division Chief Angela Bernheisel further explains, “We at CAL FIRE will be increasing our planning for emergency response and support for recreational users in light of the increase in forest visitors due to the Flow Trail.”
Other current SDSF CAL FIRE projects include timber management and resource protection, partnerships with university researchers, public education in forestry, planning for new access possibilities, and improving fire defense infrastructure including fuel breaks.
MBoSC Events Committee Lead and SCSE Event Director Steve Gemelos says, “MBoSC appreciates SDSF CAL FIRE’s collaboration on innovative trail projects and events. We’re excited about the imminent completion of the Flow Trail at SDSF, and look forward to partnering again in the future for additional opportunities for recreation.”
