A Message from Keith DeFiebre, CCCX – Promoter of the Toro Enduro, postponed until 2021 due to the River Fire

We have worked long and hard behind the scenes to make the Toro Enduro go for 2020.

There were multiple meetings with Monterey County & Toro Park regarding the COVID issues faced with a large cycling event … coming to agreements with local health officials and city managers, putting certain protocols in place for ascertaining best practices, possibilities, and adjusting expectations.

The Toro Enduro is a special event, the local community has embraced it over many years, and we were all eager for the event to go in 2020.

But then came the sudden and major impact of the recent River Fire on Salinas and Toro Park itself. The Toro Enduro, we are sad to report now, must be postponed until 2021.

The River Fire, which burned an astonishing 48,000 acres and is currently 98% contained, proved to be just too much for the Toro Enduro to happen in 2020.

The fire jumped the lines on multiple occasions and progressed to burn into and through a large portion of Toro Park. The flames burned clear through some of the trails used for the Toro Enduro and continued all the way down to the park entrance and staging areas in some locations.

Thankfully, the park is in stable condition and efforts are in the works to restore the trails and clear the damage that is now left behind.

The postponement of the Toro Enduro until 2021 is in the best interest of the CES Enduro Racers, Toro Park, and the Park Managers and Regional Firefighters.

We would like to thank those Firefighters who gave so much to battle the fire and secure the safety of the local community.

This is sad news, yet we know the 2021 version of the Toro Enduro has support from the Monterey County City managers and will benefit the Park itself with major efforts to clean-up, rebuild, and maintain the trails to the awesome standards they have always reflected for all park users.

We’ll be reaching out to all those registered for the 2020 Toro Enduro with more details; please look out for that email.
